Gauge Chart
Gauge Chart
What Is This Report Type?
A Gauge Chart (also called a Speedometer or Dial Chart) displays a single metric value on a semi-circular or circular dial, similar to a car’s speedometer. The dial has a defined minimum and maximum range with color-coded zones, and a needle or fill indicator points to the current value—providing an immediate visual assessment of performance relative to targets.
Why Is It Used?
Gauge Charts are used when you need to evaluate a single metric’s position relative to defined thresholds—such as targets, benchmarks, or acceptable ranges. They answer the question “Where do we stand?” by providing an instant visual read: Is the metric in the green zone (on target), yellow zone (caution), or red zone (critical)?
Key Features and Characteristics
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Dial / Speedometer Design | An intuitive semi-circular or circular gauge with a needle indicating the current value. |
| Color-Coded Zones | Configurable zones (e.g., Red / Yellow / Green) indicate performance bands against targets. |
| Min–Max Range | Clearly defined minimum and maximum boundaries set the scale of the gauge. |
| Target Markers | Optional target markers or benchmark lines on the dial for reference. |
| Animated Needle | The needle animates to the current value on load, providing visual engagement. |
When to Use It (Use Cases)
- Sales Performance: Showing current quota attainment as a percentage of a quarterly target.
- Call Center SLAs: Displaying the current average response time against the SLA threshold.
- Manufacturing Quality: Monitoring defect rate relative to acceptable quality limits (AQL).
- System Health: Showing CPU or memory utilization against capacity limits.
Real-Time Business Example
Scenario: A sales operations manager needs a wall-mounted display showing the team’s progress toward the quarterly revenue target of $500K.
Visualization: A Gauge Chart displays a semi-circular dial with three zones: Red (0–40%, below $200K), Yellow (40–70%, $200K–$350K), and Green (70–100%, $350K–$500K). The needle currently points to 78% ($390K), firmly in the green zone. A thin marker line at 100% ($500K) shows the ultimate target. The team can see at a glance that they are on track, with 22% remaining to close.
Common Metrics Displayed
- Quota Attainment: Percentage of a sales or production target achieved.
- SLA Compliance: Current performance level relative to service-level agreement thresholds.
- Budget Utilization: Percentage of allocated budget spent (warning when nearing 100%).
- System Utilization: CPU, memory, or disk usage relative to capacity limits.
- Customer Satisfaction: CSAT or NPS score positioned against industry benchmarks.
User Interactions
| Interaction | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Filters | Global dashboard filters (date range, department, region) automatically recalculate the gauge value. |
| Hover / Tooltip | Hovering over the needle or dial shows the exact numeric value, the target value, and the variance. |
| Click / Drill-Down | Clicking the gauge navigates to a detailed report breaking down the components of the displayed metric. |
| Threshold Configuration | Authorized users can adjust the color-zone boundaries and target markers. |
| Export | Export to Excel. |
Creation Steps
- Select Gauge Chart as the report type.
- Metrics: Drag the single KPI value (e.g., Quota Attainment %).
- Settings: Configure min, max, and color-zone thresholds.
