Card with Trend
Card with Trend
What Is This Report Type?
A Card with Trend is a compact KPI visualization that combines a single, prominent metric value with an embedded trend indicator—typically a sparkline or a percentage-change arrow. It provides both the current state and the recent trajectory of a key performance indicator in one unified view.
Why Is It Used?
This report type is used when decision-makers need more than just a number—they need context. A standalone figure like “$500K revenue” is informative, but pairing it with a “+8.2% vs. last month” trend line transforms it into an actionable insight. The Card with Trend bridges the gap between a snapshot and a time-series analysis.
Key Features and Characteristics
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Primary Metric Display | A single, large-format number representing the aggregated KPI (Sum, Average, Count, etc.). |
| Trend Sparkline | A small, simplified line or area chart embedded within the card showing the recent data trajectory. |
| Percentage Change Indicator | An upward or downward arrow with a percentage value comparing the current period to a previous period (e.g., Week-over-Week, Month-over-Month). |
| Conditional Formatting | Color-coded indicators (green for positive, red for negative) that visually communicate performance status at a glance. |
| Responsive Layout | Adapts seamlessly across desktop, tablet, and mobile views. |
When to Use It (Use Cases)
- Executive Dashboards: Monitoring total revenue with a month-over-month growth indicator.
- Product Health Monitoring: Tracking daily active users (DAU) alongside a 7-day sparkline for trajectory.
- SaaS Metrics: Displaying Monthly Recurring Revenue (MRR) with a churn-rate trend overlay.
- Operations Centers: Showing system uptime percentage with a recent-hours availability trend.
Real-Time Business Example
Scenario: A VP of Sales wants to monitor the pipeline value at the start of each day.
Visualization: A Card with Trend displays “$2.4M” in large, bold text as the current pipeline value. Below it, a green ”▲ 18% vs. last week” indicator confirms growth. A small sparkline across the bottom of the card shows the pipeline value’s upward trajectory over the past 14 days. This gives the VP instant confirmation that the sales team is building momentum without needing to open a detailed report.
Common Metrics Displayed
- Total Revenue: Cumulative sales value with period-over-period comparison.
- Active Users / Subscribers: Real-time or daily counts with growth trend.
- Customer Satisfaction (CSAT/NPS): A single satisfaction score with a historical direction indicator.
